REVISITING DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP:

  • There are many problems that arise from youth being exposed to digital technologies and the media.

  • We can assist youth to cope with such challenges.

  • There are organizations that offer assistance to help youth with these issues.

Today’s children face more challenges than previous generations.

The increased exposure to digital technologies and the media causes many issues.

To list a few, apart from the issue of ensuring cyber security and privacy, there can be problems of cyber bullying and sexual exploitation, and also within social networking.

We can assist youth to learn how to cope with these challenges.

MEDIA SMARTS:

Recently, the website of Media Smarts was brought to my attention.

This is a Canadian not-for-profit group. This award-winning site is for parents and educators.

It offers information on how to help youth to manage their interaction with digital technology and the media.

We can learn how to assist them to cope with these challenges.

A link to their website is near the end of this post.

DQ WORLD:

In a previous post we mentioned the (Digital intelligence Quotient) DQ Institute and their associated DQ World site.

The goal of this international coalition is to bring digital intelligence education to every child.

They offer online instruction for youth, particularly in the 8 to 12 year age group.

This assists them to become informed digital citizens.

BENEFITS:

There are many benefits for those who use the internet to maintain friendships:

  • Increases their self esteem;

  • Improves relationships with their friends, and

  • Enables a wider network for help.

Being informed on how to cope with today’s demanding technologies is an important skill.

As they enter adulthood this ability will be invaluable.

We can review these websites and introduce discussion topics when working with youth.
