• We can assist our youth by giving them opportunities to practice speaking.

• This skill will enable them to better find employment and enhance their careers as they age.

A COMMON FEAR:

Public speaking is the most common communication fear.

SOUGHT AFTER:

Communication skills are sought after by employers.

CAREER ENHANCEMENT:

Improved communication skills help when they seek employment in the future.

It also helps them advance in their careers.

ACTIVITIES TO HELP IMPROVE COMMUNICATION:

PRACTICE:

Use a flip cam or cell phone to record them giving instructions.

They can talk about something they are good at such as art or playing computer games.

POSITIVE EVALUATION:

Review the positive skills demonstrated when they were giving the above recorded instructions.

Give positive suggestions on where they can try to improve.

VOCABULARY:

Introduce a new word each day to build and improve their vocabulary.

IMPROMPTU SPEAKING:

Play a game by having them give a topic to each other and speaking about it for 1 to 2 minutes.

The skill of impromptu speaking is helpful in many situations including job interviews.
