THEMES TO INSPIRE DISCUSSION.

  • Relevant themes for each group session can inspire the participants.

  • Coach John Wooden’s work can be a great source of themes.

  • Have the partipicants lead and conduct the discussions themselves.

When coaching groups of youth, themes for each meeting can be an effective coaching tool.

JOHN WOODEN:

Themes will encourage the participants to research and discuss topics referring to success.  An excellent source of such themes can be the work of John Wooden.

John Wooden was one of the most successful coaches in sports history. He led his basketball teams to ten national championships in twelve years.

It was more than his team’s win-loss record that set him apart.

He was known as one of the most important and thought-inspiring scholars of life. His teachings, words and wisdom continue to influence and inspire many people all over the world.

He spent 14 years identifying 25 behaviors he believed were necessary to achieve success. This search culminated in a profound diagram Wooden called “The Pyramid of Success.” These foundational behaviors have weathered the test of time.

These could be used as themes. It is suggested that at each session, a new theme be chosen for the following meeting. The participants can come to the next session prepared to offer their input about that theme.

EXAMPLES:

Here are examples of themes from the Pyramid of Success

  • Industriousness – work hard.

  • Friendship – a powerful force coming from mutual esteem and respect.

  • Loyalty – a force that forges individuals into a team.

  • Cooperation – working together to reach a common goal.

  • Enthusiasm – leadership needs motivated and positive people.

  • Self-Control – discipline and mastery of emotions.

  • Alertness – makes your personal tasks easier to reach.

  • Respect – respect your opponents, but never fear them.

  • Intentness – be persistent, determined and tenacious to reach your goal.

  • Condition – mental and moral condition.

  • Skill – executing properly and quickly·

  • Team Spirit – sacrificing personal considerations for the welfare of all.

  • Poise – your total effort to becoming the best you are capable of being.

  • Confidence – belief in yourself.

  •  Competitive greatness -being at your best when your best is needed.
