ANXIETY: A Growing Challenge.

  • According to mental health surveys, today’s teens and young adults are the most anxious ever.

  • There is much pressure to be successful during and after school.

  • What can we do to assist them to cope?

For over a decade I have worked with young people.

During this period it has become noticeable that they have become busier than ever.

There are many things demanding their time and attention.

Anxiety and stress disorders are increasing in numbers in the rapidly changing world.

According to mental health surveys, today’s teens and young adults are the most anxious ever.

There is much more pressure to be successful in school.

Testing appears to be a major cause of anxiety as well as social media.

All this is causing increased anxiety in young people.

As they grow up and face challenges in the world, it is a normal part of their development.

We all have different levels of stress with which we can cope.

Some people are more anxious than others, and are quicker to get stressed or worried.

WHAT IS ANXIETY?

  • Anxiety is a form of stress.

  • Anxiety often relates to worry about what might happen, such as things going wrong or sensing danger.

  • It is experienced in various ways such as physically, emotionally or in their view of the world.

  • Anxiety is a natural human reaction, and it serves as an alarm system when we perceive danger or a threat.

HOW TO ASSIST YOUNG PEOPLE:

  • Anxious children can become less so when life is predictable – when they know what is expected of them, and what the consequences will be.

  • Anxious children can be encouraged to take risks such as making phone calls or talking to and making new friends.

  • Help them to establish routines as this reduces anxiety.

  • Introducing changes gradually helps them to adjust to those changes.

  • Have them plan a regular schedule as it helps avoid procrastination.

  • Show how breaking a task up into small parts and setting a specific time to work, and rewarding themselves for each task done, are helpful tools.

  • Help them realize they are empowered and not hopeless.

  • Encourage them to improve their interpersonal skills.

    • Have them help other children.

    • Involve them in group activities.

    • Encourage them to act sympathetically towards others.

Please share your ideas and thoughts about how can we assist the younger generation with the increase in stress and anxiety.

  1. Unfortunately it is a common sight to see our younger generation battling to make an impression to further their careers and education to what is perceived as the correct level. This article highlights the plight of the young, and will hopefully remind the older generations of what we need to be aware of when helping them grow.
