Social skills are becoming increasingly important in the job market.
-
The higher paying jobs are those which require good social skills.
-
Our youth can gain these skills by practicing in online groups.
Social skills are important in the modern job market.
Jobs requiring good social skills have accounted for most of the job growth since 1980.
Skilled jobs are becoming less routine. Machines are doing the repetitive tasks.
Where people interact with each other, people thrive.
The main advantage humans have over machines is their ability to have none routine interactions.
None routine tasks are not done well by computers. They are still poor at simulating human interaction.
Employees with strong social skills are valuable to employers.
High paying jobs increasingly need social skills.
Good team players with excellent interpersonal skills are sought after. Their compensation is higher.
The fastest growing jobs need a high level of interpersonal interaction.
Fields such as medicine, nursing, therapy, teaching and law are growing in market share.
Architecture and engineering are examples of occupations whose share is shrinking.
Human interaction in the workplace involves team members playing off each others strengths. Team members also need to be flexible and adapt to change.
Skills in cooperation, resolving interpersonal conflicts and improving self-control need to be developed. This is best done at a young age.
When youth learn how to do team based project work, it helps prepare them for the job market.
The above information is based on a paper titled ‘The Growing Importance of Social Skills in the Labor Market.” This paper is by Professor David Deming of Harvard University. It appeared in the November 2017 edition of The Quarterly Journal of Economics. You can find it at: https://academic.oup.com/qje/issue/132/4
